Maida's House (Ruma Maida)

Dir Teddy Soeriaatmadja/ 95 mins

Maida is an idealistic girl who has a history major. She has successfully transformed the old abandoned house into a creative and joyful “castle” for learning for street kids. One day an arrogant businessman wants to demolish the building and turn it into a major shopping mall. The businessman sent a young architect, Sakera, to realize it.

The meeting between Maida and Sakera is truly problematic. It happened at the same time as May 1998 Riots, so they have to save themselves together. Sakera still has to do his job to evict Maida and the kids from the building. But, meeting after meeting has made Sakera realize that Maida is a special woman. Sakera’s sympathy towards Maida’s struggles is even stronger when Sakera had a difference of opinion with his boss, businessman, Dasaad Muchlisin. Sakera, who believes that modern archtitecture should stand on the old architecture is reluctant to destroy the old building. On the contrary, Dasaad, who doesn’t care about history, wants to demolish it. The arrogance of Dasaad has made Sakera slowly side with Maida.

Ruma Maida is a story about how an idealistic girl name Maida struggles to save a house and discovers that there is a long history attached to the house.
